Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP is pleased to announce that, effective January 1, 2012, Travis J. Tu and Catherine A. Williams will become partners of the firm.
Travis J. Tu practices in the firm's Litigation department, focusing on intellectual property and false advertising matters. He regularly represents clients in disputes in federal court under the Lanham Act and before the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Mr. Tu has been involved in more than a dozen state court litigations involving claims of unfair competition, false advertising and consumer fraud. As part of his practice, Mr. Tu also helps clients develop substantiation for advertising claims and obtain regulatory and TV network clearance of advertising. Mr. Tu served as a Law Clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor from 2003-2004, when she was a judge in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He received his J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the New York University Law Review, was a member of Order of the Coif and was named a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar. Mr. Tu received his B.S. from Drake University, summa cum laude.
Catherine A. Williams practices in the firm’s Litigation department, representing clients in complex commercial and employment litigation. Her clients include both not-for-profit entities and corporations in a broad range of industries, including consumer products, pharmaceuticals and the media. She has handled cases in various state and federal courts, at both the trial and appellate level, and, in 2010, successfully argued in the New York Court of Appeals in a groundbreaking case involving class action certification. Ms. Williams also advises clients on employment issues including employee policies, employment and termination agreements and wage and hour law compliance. Ms. Williams served as a Law Clerk to the Hon. Paul G. Gardephe of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She received her J.D. from Yale Law School, where she was a member of the Yale Law Journal. She received her B.A. from Williams College, summa cum laude.
