Overview

Adeel Mangi is a litigation partner at Patterson Belknap, concentrating his practice in complex commercial disputes. He has particular experience in pharmaceutical pricing and False Claims Act matters, class action defense, false advertising, intellectual property litigation and employment litigation.

Adeel grew up in Karachi, Pakistan. After high school in Karachi, he proceeded to study law at the University of Oxford (Pembroke College). He graduated in the top 3% of his class at Oxford in 1998 with a First Class Degree in Law. He was awarded the Martin Wronker award for First Position in the University of Oxford (among approximately 300 Oxford law graduates) in Administrative Law. He also held the Roger Bannister Scholarship for Academics and Sports, and was awarded Pembroke College Domus scholarships and the Rower & Mawe Prize for the Best Law Student in the second year. Adeel was also part of the two-man team that won the University of Oxford Inner Temple Moot Court competition.

After graduating from Oxford, Adeel qualified as a British Barrister at Law as a Member of Lincoln's Inn. During that time, he was part of the two-man team that won the British National Bar Providers Moot Court Competition and was recognized for the best individual performance of the finals. Adeel was also awarded Denning and Hardwicke scholarships by Lincoln’s Inn.

Adeel was then awarded a Kennedy Memorial Scholarship, which provides full funding for a one year course of study at Harvard Law School. Adeel earned his LL.M. from Harvard in 2000, during which time he was awarded the Pakistan Fund Islamic Law Research Award and wrote a Master’s thesis on Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law.

Upon graduation from Harvard, Adeel joined Patterson Belknap in 2000 as an associate. In 2009 he was promoted to counsel and in 2010 Adeel was elected to the partnership at the age of 32 in recognition of his outstanding achievements. Adeel was the youngest person to be made partner in the firm’s modern history.
Adeel has represented clients including Johnson & Johnson, Genentech, CoStar, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, and the City of New York. He has tried numerous cases in various state and federal courts. As a mid-level associate, Adeel independently tried a jury case in New York Supreme Court to verdict and recovered almost two million dollars for the City.

While at Patterson Adeel has been instrumental in many of the firms trial victories. In particular, he has done extensive work in the healthcare and class action defense arenas. For the last ten years, he has been a critical part of the PBWT team representing Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries in the Average Wholesale Price Litigations, which are pending in numerous courts around the country. In particular, Adeel played a pivotal role in a significant trial victory for J&J in the AWP Multi-District Litigation class action. See In re Pharmaceutical Industry Average Wholesale Price Litigation, 2007 WL 1774644 (D. Mass. 2007). Plaintiffs in those class actions alleged that all major pharmaceutical manufacturers published false average wholesale prices, resulting in overpayment for drugs by payors. After a bench trial, the judge dismissed all tried claims against J&J, and the claims of the third remaining class were subsequently also dismissed without prejudice on motion. Adeel played a central role in both pre-trial depositions and that trial. He played a similarly prominent role in another AWP case taken to trial by the firm. Adeel has also consistently been chosen to handle significant depositions and oral arguments on behalf of a joint defense group in the AWP cases comprised of some of the leading law firms in the nation.

Adeel has also done notable work in others parts of the healthcare arena, including false advertising work on behalf of various pharmaceutical industry (and other) clients, and products liability work for pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Adeel has also been active in the legal community. In 2010, Adeel was elected to the Board of Directors of the Muslim Bar Association of New York and has since been re-elected each year. As a member of the Board Adeel works to address the needs of the legal community and the larger Muslim community, including mentorship of young lawyers. He also is an advocate for civil right issues of all individuals. Last May the Muslim Bar Association along with 20 other bar associations made a legal case for passing same-sex marriage legislation in New York. The Muslim Bar Association was the first Muslim Group and the only religious bar association to endorse the legislation. Adeel was interviewed by Thomas Reuters on the issue stating:

‘…that his group decided to support same-sex marriage to promote access for all to “fundamental civil rights” like marriage. “As lawyers, we believe strongly that this is a civil rights issue.”’

Adeel has also written on the Pakistani lawyers movement and has spoken at Bar Association Events on topics such as “Using Discovery and Experts to Defeat Class Certification.” Adeel has also served on the New York State Bar Association Committee on Attorney Professionalism.

Adeel’s commitment to pro bono and public service has also been noteworthy. Adeel’s work has included the representation of indigent asylum seekers, including a human rights worker from Chad and a gay man from Mauritania. In 2009, Adeel was one of the recipients of Immigration Equality’s Safe Haven Award in recognition of his work. Adeel has worked closely with Human Rights’ First on projects including asylum representation. Adeel is also a Trustee of a family-run trust in Pakistan that is working to create a model village in rural Sindh. The trust has sunk over 100 wells to ensure access to clean water, built a primary school that is educating over 180 children, built homes for the poor, provides medical care for the indigent and engages in mico-finance lending and community empowerment activities for village women.
