Yesterday (April 28), the judge presiding over the Google Book case EXTENDED BY FOUR MONTHS -- until September 4, 2009, the date by which copyright rightsholders must opt out of the proposed Google Book Settlement agreement. All references in the settlement to the May 5, 2009, date are revised to September 4, 2009, and the fairness hearing is re-scheduled for October 7, 2009. The extension was sought by several groups arguing that the notice period provided insufficient time for rightsholders to familiarize themselves with the agreement, seek advice, and make reasoned decisions.
