Overview
Jean Tom is an associate in the firm's Tax-Exempt Organizations Group. Ms. Tom advises public charities and private foundations on tax compliance, organizational structuring (e.g., subsidiaries, affiliates, joint ventures), international operations and grantmaking, program-related investing, governance issues such as fiduciary responsibilities and endowment issues, and general corporate and real estate matters. She has assisted in the formation of new charitable entities, advised established organizations on lobbying and advocacy activities, drafted consulting and employment agreements and reviewed client leases and mortgage documents. An active lecturer, Ms. Tom has presented on a wide range of issues including the New York laws governing non-profit organizations, corporate sponsorships and commercial co-ventures, and exemption issues for charter schools. Ms. Tom also serves as a member of the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, which assists the court in vetting candidates for positions as federal magistrate judges.
Before joining the firm, Ms. Tom served as Law Clerk to the Hon. Raymond J. Dearie, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York.
