Firm Successfully Represents Sergeants Benevolent Association in Labor Contract Disputes
The firm represented the New York City Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) in a dispute over the terms and conditions of a new labor contract with the City of New York. During mediation by NY State on the eve of the commencement of binding arbitration, the two sides reached a two-year 10.25% labor contract settlement. Under its terms, the NYPD sergeants will receive full retroactive pay increases that are significantly greater than the civilian pattern of increases. In addition, the contract achieved other productivity savings and incorporated a 2005 Health Benefits Agreement. SBA President Ed Mullins stated that "this settlement is another important advance in treating NYPD sergeants fairly, and in closing the gap in pay between NYPD Sergeants and our suburban counterparts." The contract was approved unanimously by the SBA delegate body. The SBA is the third largest police union in the country, with 10,000 members, and the largest police superior officers union.
