Firm Obtains Victory for Tax-Exempt Clients in Suit Over First Amendment Rights

On October 1, 2019, the Firm scored a significant victory for our clients, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, the New York Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties Union Foundation, when U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote in the Southern District of New York ruled that a New York law requiring tax-exempt organizations to disclose certain donors is unconstitutional because it violates the First Amendment. Our clients were among several nonprofit entities that challenged the law shortly after it was enacted in 2016. The judge ruled that the law burdened donors' rights to free association and privacy.
