Patterson Belknap Launches New Podcast Exploring Legal Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

December 15, 2020

Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP today announced the launch of Notorious: The Legal Legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” a new podcast that explores the late Justice’s cases, decisions, dissents, and her substantial overall impact on the rule of law in the United States.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a force in American jurisprudence. Her decisions and dissents offered a thoughtful and rigorous legal analysis and demonstrated her steadfast commitment to gender equality and equal justice for all. To honor her life and storied work, Patterson Belknap is proud to present this new podcast, sponsored by Women Lawyers at Patterson.

Hosted by Patterson Belknap partner Michelle M. Bufano, each episode of “Notorious” will include an in-depth discussion of one of Justice Ginsburg’s decisions or dissents, accompanied by relevant historical context, and will feature Patterson Belknap lawyers along with other invited guests. The inaugural episode begins with a comprehensive review of Reed v. Reed, briefed by Justice Ginsburg when she was still in private practice. The case marked the first time in history that the U.S. Supreme Court applied the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to strike down a law that discriminated against women.

Other early episodes will cover cases such as United States v. Virginia, in which the Court struck down the Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy, and Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., the religious freedoms case, which earned a blistering dissent from Justice Ginsburg. Guests in these episodes will include Brown University professor and constitutional law scholar Corey Brettschneider; Galen Sherwin, a practicing attorney with the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project; and Lindsey Kaley, a practicing attorney with the ACLU’s Center for Liberty.

“Women Lawyers at Patterson wanted to pay tribute to Justice Ginsburg’s historic contributions to the Supreme Court and our country,” said Lisa E. Cleary, Patterson Belknap’s co-chair and managing partner. “Justice Ginsburg exemplified the highest ideals of the legal profession, and through this podcast we celebrate her remarkable life and enduring legal achievements.”

Women Lawyers at Patterson has served as a resource group for women at the Firm since 2006, providing a forum to address matters of professional development, internal and external networking, and other issues that might resonate particularly with women lawyers.
