Judge Tyler Honored with Brooklyn Legal Services Building Named for Him

June 9, 2003

On Wednesday, June 4 The Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation celebrated the purchase of its Williamsburg headquarters building located at 260 Broadway, Brooklyn at a historic ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony. The building was named the Schriver Tyler MacCrate Center for Justice and was the crowning achievement of their Capital Campaign. Sargent Schriver, firm lawyer Harold R. Tyler, Jr. and Robert MacCrate have all been leaders in legal ethics, access to justice for the poor and in preserving the legal services program. A large plaque was also unveiled in the entranceway of the building, which listed the law firms, foundations and corporations who had made sizeable donations towards this project. Among them is Patterson Belknap, which has been a major supporter for many years.

Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation was founded in 1968 and has been the primary provider of civil legal services to low-income residents of North and East Brooklyn, to the community organizations that serve those communities, and is nationally recognized for its Community and Economic Development legal work, as well as its representation of local groups in their community struggles.
