Patterson Belknap Achieves 2021 Mansfield Certification Plus from Diversity Lab in Recognition of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Efforts

On September 13, Diversity Lab, an incubator for innovative ideas and solutions that boost diversity and inclusion in law, announced that Patterson Belknap has earned the highest designation of Mansfield Certified Plus.

The Mansfield Rule Certification recognizes law firms who have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, and recruitment.  The certified firms have completed a rigorous 12-month collaboration with Diversity Lab with built-in measurement, transparency, and accountability. Through their participation, they have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and are making meaningful progress on diversifying law firm leadership. The "Plus" status recognizes that, in addition to meeting Certification requirements, the Firm has achieved at least 30% diversity representation in a notable number of current leadership roles.

Our Mansfield Certified Plus achievement reaffirms our focus on creating a diverse community of lawyers and business services staff, and is one of many concrete steps that the Firm is undertaking to advance our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts internally and within the legal community.”

Patterson Belknap supports a number of organizations that promote diversity in the legal profession, including the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD), National Association of Women Lawyers, LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York, Muslim Bar Association of New York, and the South Asian Bar Association of New York. The Firm also has a Diversity Fellowship Program, which serves to demonstrate our commitment to recruiting, retaining, and promoting attorneys who contribute to the diversity of our Firm and our profession, in addition to resource groups at the Firm who are also involved with assisting the Hiring Committee in its efforts to recruit women and diverse students, clerks, and laterals. For a number of years, the Firm has partnered with Legal Outreach, an organization which prepares urban youth from underserved communities in New York City to compete at high academic levels by using intensive legal and educational programs. In 2021, Patterson Belknap launched a TEAK Fellowship internship program for college-aged students. The TEAK Fellowship is “a free NYC-based program that helps talented students from low-income families achieve their potential.”  Most recently the Firm scored a 100% rating in Human Rights Campaign’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) report. The CEI report provides an in-depth analysis and rating of large U.S. employers and their policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees. Patterson Belknap was also recognized by The American Lawyer as the law firm with the highest percentage of LGBTQ+ attorneys in the 2020 and 2021  “National Law Journal LGBT Scorecard.”
