‘Lead Generation’ Business Under Regulatory Glare for Privacy Violations

Lead generation and data aggregation companies that focus on collecting consumer data for marketing purposes have done surprisingly well in the last few years. And in doing so, they have amassed databases rich in content, including detailed consumer and behavioral information. One leading data broker boasted of a database that includes ‘‘[d]emographics, life-stage segmentation, brand affinities and purchase tendencies for nearly every adult consumer in the U.S.’’ Now, though, these companies are facing increased scrutiny by federal and state regulators.
