Firm Attorneys Honored by New York Legal Services Organizations

On Monday, October 24, 2016, Partner Herman H. Raspé was honored at the City Bar Justice Center’s Celebration of Service reception at the New York City Bar Association. Mr. Raspé received the Jeremy G. Epstein Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service, for his extraordinary commitment to the organization’s refugee assistance program.

On Wednesday, October 26, 2016, Patterson Belknap was honored to be one of the recipients of The Legal Aid Society’s 2016 Pro Bono Publico Awards for outstanding service to The Legal Aid Society and its clients. In addition to recognizing the Firm, The Legal Aid Society honored many individual attorneys and one paralegal with Pro Bono Publico awards for providing exceptional legal services to low-income New Yorkers. Firm honorees included: Lisa E. Cleary, David W. Dykhouse, Jane Metcalf, Jonah Rizzo-Bleichman, Alexander Shapiro, and Rachel B. Sherman. The Honorable Janet DiFiore, the Chief Judge of the State of New York, presented the awards.

SEC Enforcement Launches New Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit

Firm Achieves Appellate Victory on Behalf of Gilead Sciences

On August 13, 2026, Patterson Belknap secured a significant appellate victory for our client, Gilead Sciences, Inc. (“Gilead”), in a trademark lawsuit brought to stop the alleged illegal importation and sale in the United States of international, non-FDA-approved Gilead medicines. The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit affirmed the district court’s issuance of a preliminary injunction against all defendants in the action, enjoining them from violating Gilead’s trademark rights by importing or facilitating the importation of these foreign medicines through illicit and potentially unsafe channels. Fees Recoverable by Oversecured Creditors in Bankruptcy: The Application of Code Sections 506(b) and 502(b)

Bankruptcy Code section 506(b) entitles an oversecured creditor to post-petition interest and reasonable fees and other charges. Are a creditor’s pre-petition charges also subject to a court’s view of what is reasonable? Courts are split on this issue. A judge in New York recently explained why, in his view, reasonableness is not the right standard for the pre-petition portion of a claim.
