Firm Ranked in the Top 5 of The American Lawyer's 2025 Pro Bono Scorecard

Patterson Belknap has been ranked fourth in The American Lawyer’s 2025 Pro Bono Scorecard. The rankings assess pro bono efforts among Am Law 200 firms and are based on both the average number of pro bono hours per attorney and the percentage of attorneys performing more than 20 hours of pro bono service in 2024. The American Lawyer’s reporting on the Scorecard notes that the firms leading the rankings have exhibited a “solid and sustained commitment to pro bono work” and features insights on Patterson Belknap's history of public service from the firm's Pro Bono Chair, Michael F. Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan notes the significance of the firm's 20th anniversary of 100% pro bono participation in 2024, commenting, "It's a great source of pride for us."

Additionally, the firm’s landmark victory against a government contractor on behalf of tortured detainees at Abu Ghraib prison is ranked first on The American Lawyer’s list of 15 cases that "represent some of the very best of the legal industry's pro bono efforts." The matter, which resulted in a $42 million damages verdict, garners the largest number of lawyer hours across all submissions, with nearly 8,000 hours logged by firm attorneys in 2024 alone.
