Firm Secures Win in NY1 News Channel’s NYPD FOIL Lawsuit

April 14, 2017

On April 13, 2017, the firm secured a significant victory for NY1 News when Judge Kathryn Freed ordered the NYPD to review the 190 hours of body camera footage the news channel requested within 60 days. Previously, the NYPD had agreed to review only three hours of footage. The NYPD must then provide NY1 with any footage that is not exempt under the state's Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). In a prior decision the judge had ruled that the NYPD's request that NY1 pay $36,000 before the NYPD would process the request was illegal. Saul Shapiro appeared in New York state court in June 2016 to argue on behalf of NY1. He was assisted by Jonah Knobler and Amy Vegari.
