Why did you choose Patterson Belknap?

Joining Patterson Belknap’s tax-exempt organizations group gave me the chance to work with the mission-driven clients I became a lawyer to work for, and with sharp, supportive, and grounded colleagues.  For me, it’s been an ideal combination; my work is fascinating and challenging, I feel good about its impact, and I spend my days working with people who make me a better lawyer and whose company I enjoy.

What types of training (both formal and informal) have you received and how has it benefited your practice?

My formal training has come from attending tax-exempt organizations conferences (which my group and the firm actively encourage), and from bi-weekly teaching lunches that our group puts on.  My informal training has come mostly from working with my more senior colleagues.  I practice in a fairly specialized area, with a lot of unique rules and issues, so having access to training and experienced colleagues is essential to developing into a self-sufficient exempt organizations attorney.

What level of interaction do you have with clients? With opposing counsel?

I have been interacting with clients and opposing counsel since my second week on the job, and it increased steadily throughout my first year at the firm.  I am already the primary point of contact for some of our clients, and for opposing counsel as well.
