We purposefully operate from one office in New York City which allows us to seamlessly share our knowledge and experience and foster a collaborative culture that benefits our clients, our attorneys and our staff.
All of our lawyers are committed to serving clients nationally and globally. Our practices combine deep and varied litigation and appellate experience in fields including commercial law, intellectual property (patent, anti-counterfeiting, trademark and copyright), advertising litigation and unfair competition, employment, law firm defense, product liability, securities, structured finance, and white collar defense and investigations, with a unique transactional and counseling practice that includes corporate, tax, employee benefits, trusts and estates and real estate law, as well as a leading tax-exempt organizations practice.
Junior associates at Patterson Belknap routinely handle what many other firms save for senior associates or even partners. The variety of work—from discrete, fast-paced litigation and general counseling to high-profile, complex cases and transactions—gives our attorneys a wide array of experiences and opportunities.
One of the best ways for new associates to learn is by doing. In becoming a great trial lawyer, there's no substitute for getting on your feet in court and conducting your first argument or examination of a witness. Likewise, seeing a deal through to closing provides true insight into transactional practice.
The firm also recognizes the importance of, and provides, structured training and guidance. We have a robust in-house training program and support participation in many external continuing education programs as well.
Each new associate is paired with an associate mentor and an onboarding partner. Associates also participate in cross-functional mentoring circles. Mentors provide professional and practical advice to associates transitioning into the firm and developing their careers and our mentoring programs aim to support each stage of an associate's professional development.
Internal promotions are based on merit, and decisions are made by the entire partnership. We are proud that many of our partners started their legal careers at the firm and rose through the ranks to partnership.
